What makes a Pennsylvania long-distance move different
Operational realities that shape every Pennsylvania long-distance move we run. We price for them upfront so move day has no surprises.
The state effectively runs as two distinct
The state effectively runs as two distinct moving markets. Eastern Pennsylvania (Philadelphia, Lehigh Valley, Allentown, Reading) functions as part of the Northeast Corridor and behaves much like New Jersey – Florida outbound is the dominant route, followed by the Carolinas and Texas. Pittsburgh and Western Pennsylvania (Erie, Altoona, Wheeling-area suburbs) face west and south – Ohio, Tennessee, the Carolinas, and Texas.
Inbound to Pennsylvania is steady but not
Inbound to Pennsylvania is steady but not as dramatic as inbound to North Carolina or Florida. The Lehigh Valley has been growing as a logistics-corridor commuter alternative to NYC and North Jersey, with affordable housing drawing relocations from those markets. State College (Penn State) sees academic-cycle moves in late August.
Winter weather is a real operational factor
Winter weather is a real operational factor in Western Pennsylvania, especially in the Pittsburgh metro and Erie. We pad delivery windows by 1-2 days during December-February for moves passing through or originating in lake-effect snow zones.

Moving across state lines from Pennsylvania: what changes
A move from Pennsylvania to another state is an interstate move, and that changes who regulates it and what protections you have.
Your mover must be federally licensed. Interstate household movers are regulated by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration and need an active USDOT number and MC number. A Plus Moving & Storage is USDOT 3006268 and MC 00026730, and you can check both at safer.fmcsa.dot.gov.
Know which kind of estimate you have. A non-binding estimate can go up once the truck is weighed. A binding estimate can’t. We quote binding written estimates after a 10-minute video survey, so there is no price increase after you book.
You should receive the federal moving booklet. Interstate movers are required to give you FMCSA’s “Your Rights and Responsibilities When You Move.” Read it before moving day; it explains claims, valuation and what a mover can and can’t charge.
Plan the paperwork in your new state. Most states expect new residents to switch their driver’s license and vehicle registration within a set number of days, often 30 to 60. Check your new state’s DMV site before you go so it’s on your list.
Pennsylvania pickups we plan for
Philadelphia row homes. Center City, South Philly and Fishtown row homes often have narrow streets, steep stairs and no driveway. We position the truck early and use a smaller shuttle truck where a full-size trailer can’t get in.
Pittsburgh hills. Neighborhoods like Mount Washington, Squirrel Hill and Polish Hill have steep, tight streets. These are routine for us but need to be identified on the video survey so they’re priced in.
The Main Line, Lehigh Valley and Harrisburg. Mostly single-family homes with good truck access, which keeps loading straightforward and often makes these the quickest moves to schedule.
The most common moves out of Pennsylvania head to Florida, the Carolinas, Georgia and Texas. See Philadelphia to Miami, Philadelphia to Tampa and Pennsylvania to Florida for lane details, and our Moving Cost Index for real prices from 669 completed moves.
Pennsylvania long-distance moving questions
How much does it cost to move out of Pennsylvania?
It depends on home size and distance. From our Moving Cost Index of 669 completed moves, a 3-bedroom home going 1,000–1,500 miles (Pennsylvania to Florida, for example) typically runs about $6,200–$7,800, and a 2-bedroom going 500–1,000 miles about $4,500–$6,200. Your binding price is set after a 10-minute video survey.
Do I need a different mover for an interstate move than a local one?
Yes. A move that crosses state lines needs a mover licensed by the FMCSA with an active USDOT and MC number. A Plus is a licensed interstate carrier, not a broker, so the company you book is the company that moves you.
How long does delivery take from Pennsylvania?
East Coast moves usually deliver within about a week of loading; longer cross-country moves take more. Your written estimate gives the delivery window for your specific route.
