Every long-distance move comes down to one decision made early: who does the loading. Choose a container and you supply the labor while a company supplies the transport. Choose a full-service carrier and a licensed crew does all of it. Almost every other difference in price, timing and risk follows from that one choice.

The three models

1. Moving container

A container is delivered to your driveway, you load it over days or weeks, and the provider transports it. Containers double as storage, which is their real advantage when your dates do not line up. PODS is the best known; U-Pack offers ReloCubes and trailer space priced by the linear foot.

2. Rental truck

Cheapest on paper and the most work. You load, you drive a large unfamiliar vehicle across the country, you fuel it, and you unload. Fuel, tolls, lodging and one-way drop fees close much of the gap with a container.

3. Full-service carrier

A licensed interstate carrier packs, loads, drives, and unloads. A Plus Moving and Storage operates under US DOT 3006268 across all 48 contiguous states, with a binding written estimate issued before the move.

What each model really costs

Independent 2026 cost guides put a cross-country PODS container at roughly $3,000 to $5,800, and long-distance moves under 1,000 miles at roughly $1,000 to $3,000. A single U-Pack ReloCube is commonly quoted around $1,200 to $2,000, with trailer space at roughly $200 to $250 per linear foot. Those are third-party orientation figures, not quotes.

For full service we publish our own invoice data. Across 669 completed A Plus interstate moves, most fell between $2,000 and $19,300; a three-bedroom home moving 1,000 to 1,500 miles ran $6,200 to $7,800. Full ranges by distance band and home size are in the Moving Cost Index.

The gap between a container and full service is not profit. It is labor, equipment, padding, disassembly, reassembly, and liability for the load.

The four questions that decide it

  1. Can you physically load your home in three days? Container providers assume you can. A one-bedroom with help, yes. A four-bedroom with a garage and a workshop, usually not.
  2. Do your dates line up? If there is a gap between move-out and move-in, a container that doubles as storage is genuinely useful.
  3. What is in the shipment? A piano, a gun safe, a pool table, antiques or medical equipment change the answer immediately. See our specialty moving page.
  4. Who carries the risk if something breaks? If you loaded it, that is generally on you. A licensed carrier that loaded the truck carries valuation coverage on the shipment.

Quick guide

Compare the specific options

Detailed head-to-head breakdowns: PODS vs full-service movers and U-Pack vs full-service movers.

Whichever way you lean, verify the company first. Our guide on how to spot a moving scam and verify a licensed mover shows how to check a USDOT number on the federal SAFER database in about five minutes. For a binding full-service number to compare against, a ten-minute video survey is enough.

Frequently asked questions

Is a moving container cheaper than a full-service mover?

Almost always on the invoice, because you supply the labor. The difference is not profit; it covers loading, equipment, padding, disassembly, reassembly and liability for the load. Add the cost of loading help before you compare the two numbers.

When does a moving container make the most sense?

Studios through two-bedroom homes, budgets that matter more than the weekend, no specialty items, and moves where move-out and move-in dates do not line up, since the container doubles as storage.

When should I hire a full-service carrier instead?

Three-bedroom homes and larger, a firm deadline, no help at either end, or a shipment containing a piano, gun safe, pool table, antiques or medical equipment.

How do I compare a container quote to a moving quote fairly?

Price both for the same inventory, then add loading labor to the container figure and check the loading window is realistic for your home. A ten-minute video walkthrough is enough to produce a binding written estimate to compare against.
